Broccoli Cheez Soup

Broccoli Cheez Soup

The only thing Sara loves more than marshmallows is this vegan broccoli cheez soup.

Kidding!!  She doesn’t love it that much!  But to even put it in the same category as marshmallows is saying a lot, if you know how much Sara loves those sticky white puff-balls.

Sara's dinner ideas

But check out Sara’s list of “Dinner Ideas”… at the very top… “Broccoli cheese soup”… NOT “marshmallows.” …

Yellow Lentil Soup with Coconut Milk & Lime

Yellow lentil soup with coconut milk & lime

In Philippines it never truly gets cold enough to make soup… but we make it anyway, because hey, soup is good, right?  I just wait for a cloudy day (and in rainy season, I never have to wait long!) turn on the air-conditioner, and pretend we measure temperature in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius.  It’s worked for me for the past 12 years, so please don’t ruin my fantasy.

Yellow lentil soup with coconut milk & lime

As I’m writing this, it’s “cool” and rainy… a perfect day for soup, wouldn’t you agree?  I love this yellow lentil coconut beauty: it has my favourite flavours of Thailand… ginger, coriander, fresh chilies, cilantro, coconut, & kafir lime… …

French Potato Soup

French Potato Soup

This is the soup that sustained me throughout my illness in the past 2 weeks.  I might even give it some credit for helping me get better… it’s that good!

I actually got the inspiration for this soup as I watched Turbo’s homemade potato-rice-carrot food cool on the counter.  Yes, he is spoiled… but admittedly, there was some question of food allergy with him and that gluten-free dog food was just too expensive not to “stretch” with some homemade concoction of our own.  He’s now healthy and lush-coated (it wasn’t the food after all but the floor cleaner!)… but why mess with a  good thing?  So we continue to make part of his food every week, and I have to say, I’m sort of jealous every time I inhale that potato-ey aroma….

Hearty Minestrone Soup

Hearty Minestrone Soup

It’s January, the supposed “cool” season here in Philippines.  I say “supposed” because it’s actually not so cool this year… what’s up with that??  My family can attest that I easily feel cheated with the weather, most often in the circumstance of it being too hot when I’m expecting cold… or at least cool.  But come on, after living in a tropical climate for almost 12 years, don’t I deserve some temps under 80??

I know, I hate whining just as much as you do…

Hearty Minestrone Soup

So in honour of Theda’s 14th birthday today, I’ll stop complaining and look at the bright side as she always does.  I do have to  acknowledge that it is getting rather breezy at night, and evening breezes can put one in the mood for soup.  Everyone loves soup, right??  So thanks, Thedes… you are my inspiration in so many ways!!…

Curried Pumpkin Soup

Curried pumpkin soup

Our weather took a turn to the cool(er) side a couple of days ago!

In Philippines that means it didn’t get above 93 F (34C) during the day, and down to about 75 F (24C) at night.  This is as close as we’re gonna get to autumn, folks.  Sometimes I create my own little fall/winter in my home office by blasting the air-conditioner and pulling on a sweater, but please, let that be our little secret…

So it was a cloudy and reasonably low-humidity day.  I looked out my window and imagined it was that really cool, crisp, almost biting fall weather that would beckon me outside to wade through the fallen leaves and pick apples and pull a  cozy scarf around my neck to keep the chill off.

And then I turned the air-conditioner off, ditched my sweater, and went downstairs to make this curried pumpkin soup….

Creamy Roasted Red Pepper Soup

IMG_5065

Apparently, several more people than just my aunts and 5 others read my first post.  I know for a fact that at least 3 cousins read it too… and one of them is not even on my side!

Seriously, folks, I was so overwhelmed your wonderful and supportive response to my first post that I could not wait to share the next thing with you.  And that next thing is going to be the first “official” recipe that I ever wrote- this beautiful creamy roasted red pepper soup!  I thought it was appropriate since we are just starting out, don’t you agree?  I’ve been cooking for a long time, but like most of us out there, my first recipes were from cookbooks, the internet, and my mother (usually written on the back of grocery receipts.)

I’m like my mother in that…
