What I Ate Camping

Colorado Wildflowers

I promised you early on that my eating life is not all massaged kale salads, chia pudding, and homemade almond milk.  That’s right, friends, there are days, sometimes several in a row, when my normal abundance of fresh fruits and raw veg are scarcely seen.  Granted, it’s not often, but it happens.  Usually on vacation!  And always when camping….

What I Ate Wednesday- when things don’t go according to plan

So perfectly juicy and delicious!

So perfectly juicy and delicious!

Just as I thought I was over jet lag, I wasn’t.

I slept for 10 straight hours Tuesday night and the first time I opened my eyes and looked at the clock, it was 9:14am.  Whoa!  This is coming from a girl whose normal wake-up time is around 5am, no alarm (it’s not virtuous, it’s just me…)  But seriously, 9:14, without even a warning it was so late!  I never even rolled over at 6:23 or anything like that… I guess I needed the sleep.

My children are looking forward to home leave as much or more than I am.  But as I recently found out, our eager anticipation is focussed quite differently.

Theda: “I can’t wait to get to the U.S.!”

Sara: “I know!!  Because Pa has GOLDFISH!!”

Tommy: “And Cheetos!!!”

Theda: “And Toaster Strudels!!!”

Yes folks.  These are the kids of  a dietitian, and I won’t fault you for the secret satisfaction that you must feel from knowing that they crave junk food just like normal people’s children.  My kids are not…

Sometimes I’m a killjoy at parties.

Don’t get me wrong… I don’t mean to be.  I love parties.  But imagine this: we’re all standing around, plates in hand, making small talk.

“So what do you here, Rebecca?”

“Well, just call me Bex. I’m a dietitian.  I…”  But whatever I was going to say is lost in the blaze of panic that ensues from my statement “I’m a dietitian” and I see eyes flitting from plate to plate, making instant comparisons.  And all of a sudden I find myself standing alone with my plate of… whatever it happens to be… again.

Let’s get something straight here… …
