What I Ate With Jet Lag

Mabuhay!!  I’ve been back for less than 48 hours and I realise I should have just called this post “Eat-Sleep-Repeat”…

I can’t seem to stay awake more than 4 hours at a time, nor can I seem to stay asleep either.  I’m sure those of you travelling between North America (or Europe) and Asia can relate.

There are certainly steps one can take to minimise jet lag, such as spending time in the sunshine, staying awake as long as possible during the day, not giving in to the almost crushing desire to take a nap at 4pm (that will undoubtedly result in sleeping until 10pm & prolonging your misery), and avoiding caffeine and alcohol.

Did I do any of these things?  Not yet… I’m SOOO indulging in my jet lag!!

I decided to just go with a 24-hour eating record, since my sleeping is all over the place.  We’ll start with what I ate at midnight, after having been awake since 10:45pm- yes, I gave into the 4pm nap desire and it felt beyond heavenly to crawl under my covers and zonk out for 6 hours.  My “nap” had caused me to sleep through dinner the night before, so I was ravenous when I woke up.  I had this bowl of Greek yogurt with chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, oats, bran flakes, dried cranberries, and my beloved mangoes.  Missed you guys!!

Between the hours of midnight & 3am, I got some “work” done. I can’t even remember what, but I’m sure it was productive.  Then I slept from 3-6am.  When I woke up I had a cup of coffee, and coffee always seems to help everything!

Before heading off to church, I made my favourite green smoothie.  Now that I think about it, I should put I this smoothie on the list of “things that help you get over jet lag.”  Look at that vibrant colour, that alone will wake you up!!  This bad boy contains spinach, frozen pineapple, 1/2 an orange, almond milk, chia seeds, and fresh mint.  It’s the perfect combination of fresh, creamy coolness to start my day (or in this case, continue my day…)

After church, Mark & I went out for brunch at Caviar Restaurant & Champagne Bar to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary.  Happy us!!  We usually wind up celebrating either in an airport lounge, or while jet-lagged & falling asleep over dinner, as the end of our summer leave always coincides with our special day.  So this year we decided to play it smart and go out to brunch, when the chances of me being awake were greater than 50%.

Mixing champagne with jet lag can be a risky combination, but we decided to go for it anyway, and it turned out to be a fabulous idea.

For my meal I selected eggs Benedict with spinach & mushrooms instead of ham.  Delicious!

How can you celebrate an anniversary without chocolate??  Caviar made a beautiful dessert plate for us, complete with sweet anniversary wishes.

After such a rich and delicious meal,  I took another nap, and wasn’t hungry for dinner.  So I had some fruit at dinnertime and called it a night.

It’s almost a decent bedtime… and even though I broke all the jet-lag rules today I’m hoping to sleep solidly through the night.  Think I will??

Do you have any secrets to getting over jet lag??
